Year 2 Autumn 2 Home Learning

Welcome back!

It is lovely to have all the children back together and they have been amazing at learning the new routines and re-establishing or making new friendships. We have been impressed at how they are settling to their learning and trying their best.

We have some fun learning planned for them this half term. This half term's curriculum news details your child's planned learning.

The year 2 team are very much looking forward to working with you and your child this year.

Year 2 Curriculum News Autumn 1

Autumn 1 HOME LEARNING  – This half term you are receiving a half termly home learning overview which shows the weekly spellings, words to learn to read and phonics sounds to read and write for each week. Please keep hold of this as these will be the home learning we expect your child to learn each week.

This overview aims to revisit and consolidate skills for many children, as we want to develop confidence and independence.  It also begins to look at the year 2 curriculum. We are currently assessing children to find out individual ‘gaps’ in their learning and will let you know, over the next few weeks, where you may be able to help with these ‘gaps’.

Please also keep an eye out in your child’s book bag as some weeks we will also be sending home additional home learning on a Friday. These may be individual to your child’s needs and so will help with their ‘catch-up’ or they may be an additional challenge.

Spellings to learn

We would like your child to learn the spellings listed each week. Please look at the ‘Spelling leaflet’ too which gives many fun ways for your child to learn those spellings. A paper copy of the Spelling Leaflet’ will be sent home.

Words to learn to read

The weekly words to learn to read revisit phase 5 and include year 1 and 2 common exception words. Please find fun ways for your child to learn to read these words. Learning to read tricky or key words, without the need to sound out, supports your child’s reading fluency, comprehension and progress.

Sounds to read and write

These are the sounds we will be learning in phonics lessons each week. It is important for your child’s progress in both reading and writing to have a secure knowledge and understanding of phonics and spellings. Please support your child in practising these sounds so that they can read and write them confidently.

Maths skills to practice

Please support your child with the weekly maths activities. Many of these can be completed through oral chanting or through practically using objects around the house. Helping your child with these numeracy skills supports their maths fluency, mental arithmetic skills and helps them to make links when solving calculations. A few minutes practising every day is beneficial.  You can do this in the car, out in the garden or when walking along the street – quick and often works best!
